Structure persuasive copy using the Attention-Interest-Desire-Action sequence to guide readers from awareness to committed action.
Adopted by: Direct Marketing Association; advertising agencies globally including Ogilvy, BBDO, and Leo Burnett; email marketing platforms including Mailchimp and HubSpot as curriculum content
Impact: AIDA-structured direct mail historically outperforms unstructured copy by 20-40% in response rate (DMA Annual Report data); Ogilvy's AIDA-based campaigns for American Express and Rolls-Royce set industry benchmarks still studied today
AIDA works because it maps to the reader's cognitive journey. You cannot demand action from a reader who is not yet interested. You cannot generate desire in a reader who is not yet interested. The sequence is not arbitrary — each stage is a prerequisite for the next.

If you're in 6 Slack channels, that's your entire afternoon." Body (Desire): "Teams using async-first communication ship 40% faster and report higher focus scores. Here's the exact protocol Basecamp uses." CTA (Action): "Download the 1-page async protocol — free, no email required."
