Run this skill before you need it — building an incident response plan during an active breach is like building a fire escape during a fire. The entire value of this plan is in the preparation.
Customize the team roster to your organization — a 5-person startup and a 500-person enterprise have different IR structures. Scale the roles to your reality, but never skip the core functions: commander, technical lead, legal, communications.
Test with tabletop exercises quarterly — a plan that has never been tested is a plan that will fail. Inject realistic scenarios, measure response times, and improve based on findings.
Keep the "First 15 Minutes" card visible — print it, post it in Slack, include it in on-call runbooks. The first responder's actions determine whether evidence is preserved or destroyed.
Update after every incident AND every exercise — the plan is a living document. If a tabletop reveals that your escalation path has a gap, fix it that week, not next quarter.

Measure your program — track mean-time-to-detect, mean-time-to-contain, mean-time-to-recover, and post-mortem action item completion rate. What you measure, you improve.
