An article is not "here is what I found in the archive" — it is "historians have understood X this way; the evidence shows it is better understood this other way." Positioning is therefore not throat-clearing; it is the spine of the article.

Because the AHR is the discipline's general-history flagship, the most frequent positioning failures are ones where the intervention is invisible to a historian outside the author's field. The first two rows below are common grounds for an early editorial decline; confirm screening specifics against the journal's current submission guidelines.

Imagine a manuscript on enslaved litigants in a colonial Spanish-American court. A first draft positions it as "the first study of these particular case files" — a recovery framing that reads, to a generalist, as local and self-justifying. Relocated as an intervention, the same archive speaks to a live debate: historians have treated colonial legal personhood as a settled exclusion, and these suits show enslaved people using the courts as a recognized strategy, which forces a revision of how we periodize the reach of imperial law. Now the closest rival reading (that such suits were exceptional and tolerated, not structural) is named and answered with the frequency and outcomes in the files, and a historian of an entirely different empire can see the stakes: how subordinated actors made law work. The recovery becomes a reframing with a clear "what it changes" sentence.
