Claude Code v2.1.196–v2.1.201: Sonnet 5 becomes the default
Claude Code shipped six releases this week, headlined by v2.1.197 making Claude Sonnet 5 the default model, with a native 1M-token context window and promotional pricing of $2/$10 per Mtok through August 31. v2.1.198 flipped subagents to run in the background by default (Claude keeps working and is notified when they finish), made Claude in Chrome generally available, and added a /dataviz command. v2.1.199 taught stacked slash-skill invocations to load up to five leading skills instead of just the first, and made SSL certificate errors fail immediately with an actionable hint rather than burning retries. v2.1.200 stopped AskUserQuestion dialogs from auto-continuing by default and renamed the default permission mode to "Manual" across the CLI, VS Code, and JetBrains. v2.1.196 added organization default models set in the org console. Plugin and hook authors should note the background-subagent and permission-mode defaults in particular.
