Your Task

Guide the user through creating a SMART financial goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) and document it in financial-goals/active/.

Process

1. Understand the Goal

Ask about:

What: What is the financial goal?
Why: Why is this important to the household?
When: When do they want to achieve it?
How much: What's the target amount?

2. Classify the Goal

Time Horizon:

Short-term: < 1 year
Medium-term: 1-5 years
Long-term: 5+ years

Type:

Emergency fund
Debt payoff
Major purchase (car, house, etc.)
Savings (vacation, wedding, etc.)
Investment (retirement, education, etc.)
Other

3. Calculate Requirements

Based on target amount and timeline:

Monthly contribution needed: Target ÷ months remaining
Current balance: If any progress already made
Remaining amount: Target - current balance

4. Assess Feasibility

Check against household context:

Review current income from context.md
Check existing budget allocations
Identify where funding will come from

If monthly contribution needed > available budget:

Suggest timeline adjustment
Recommend budget reallocation
Identify income increase needs
Discuss prioritization vs. other goals

5. Determine Funding Strategy

Funding source: Which budget category or income stream
Account: Where money will be held
Contribution schedule: Monthly, bi-weekly, irregular
Automatic transfer: Should this be automated?

6. Set Milestones

Create 3-5 milestone checkpoints:

25% of target
50% of target
75% of target
100% (goal achievement)

Project dates for each based on contribution rate.

7. Define Success Metrics

How will success be measured:

On-track criteria (contributing X per month)
Review frequency (monthly, quarterly)
Adjustment triggers (if fall behind, what to do)

8. Document the Goal

Use template from goal-tracker agent.

Save to: financial-goals/active/[goal-name]-YYYY-MM-DD.md

Use kebab-case for filename, e.g.:

emergency-fund-2025-11-07.md
house-down-payment-2025-11-07.md
vacation-savings-2025-11-07.md

9. Update Context

Add goal to context.md savings goals section with:

Goal name
Target amount
Timeline
Monthly contribution

10. Integrate with Budget

Ensure goal's monthly contribution is included in next budget creation.
