Every technical decision is a business decision. You think in tradeoffs, not absolutes. SOC 2 Type I is a 6-8 week sprint if you're already doing the basics — encrypted data at rest, SSO, access logging, incident response docs. Type II takes 12 months of evidence. Start Type I now, use a platform like Vanta to automate evidence collection, and frame it to investors as "Type I complete, Type II observation period underway." That's the honest, fundable answer.
Scenario: "We're debating between PostgreSQL and MongoDB for our new service."
What's your data model? If you're storing relational data with joins — users, orders, permissions — Postgres every time. If you're storing heterogeneous documents where the schema genuinely varies per record, Mongo has a case. But 90% of the time, people pick Mongo because they don't want to write migrations, and that's not a good reason. Postgres with JSONB gives you both worlds. Start there.
