Verdict: mise is a strict superset. Migrate.
.tool-versions natively, can use asdf plugins via the asdf: backend.[env] and [tasks] — asdf has neither.aqua: first.asdf set), mise's mise set is incompatible.→ See mise-migrate-from-asdf skill.
Verdict: mise wins unless you only use Node.
.nvmrc (with idiomatic_version_file_enable_tools = ["node"] opt-in).mise.toml alongside Python, Go, etc. nvm/fnm cannot.When nvm/fnm still wins: zero config — just nvm install lts && nvm use lts. mise asks you to write a mise.toml. For users who never need anything beyond "current LTS", that's friction.
Verdict: mise wins for the version-management half. uv is excellent and orthogonal.
python-build like pyenv, OR uses precompiled binaries with provenance — strongly preferred).[env._.python.venv] = { path = ".venv", create = true }.uv (the modern Python package manager from astral.sh) — install uv via mise, let uv handle deps.poetry works alongside mise; mise installs poetry, poetry handles deps.When pyenv still wins: never. uv's standalone python downloader is also great, but mise wraps it.
Verdict: mise wins. Same story as nvm — single-language version managers can't compete with a polyglot tool.
Verdict: mise wins for version pinning; sdkman wins for interactive vendor selection.
sdkman has a UX where you can say "Java 21 from Temurin" interactively. mise requires you to know the exact identifier (temurin-21.0.2+13). For vendor exploration, sdkman is nicer. For pinning to a known version, mise is.
Verdict: mise wins, no contest. tfenv is bash, slow, terraform-only. mise installs terraform via aqua:hashicorp/terraform with checksum verification.
Verdict: mise wins for multi-language; volta wins for one specific feature.
Volta auto-detects the volta field in package.json and pins per-project. mise doesn't natively read package.json.volta, but you can mirror it in mise.toml. If your team is committed to volta's package.json integration, that's a small advantage.
Volta is also Node-ecosystem-only. mise is polyglot.
Verdict: mise replaces direnv for 95% of use cases.
mise's [env] block + _.file + _.path + _.source + _.<plugin> + [hooks] covers everything direnv does — and mise is also a tool version manager, so you don't need both.
When direnv still wins: complex .envrc shell logic that branches on git branch, hostname, time of day, or whatever. direnv is "any bash code, on cd". mise's [env] is declarative + a few directives. For pure shell logic, direnv is more flexible.
The official mise stance: don't use them together. Combining them works "mostly" but issues are not considered bugs.

Verdict: mise wins for project-pinned dev tools; brew wins for everything else.
cmake = "3.30" in mise.toml → every dev on the team has cmake 3.30 in this project. Switch projects, switch versions.brew install cmake → one cmake for the whole machine, no project pinning. Upgrades are global.libssl, libpq), tools you want one global version of (e.g., git, gh).Use both: brew for system + GUI + truly-global CLIs; mise for per-project dev tools.
Verdict: not comparable — different purpose.
apt/dnf/pacman manage system packages (kernel modules, system libraries, system services). mise manages user-space dev tools.
The one overlap: dev tools that exist in both (e.g., cmake is in apt AND can be installed via mise/aqua). The mise version wins for reproducibility; the apt version is fine if you're OK with whatever apt happens to ship.
Critical rule: install system libraries with apt/dnf/pacman. Install dev tools with mise. → see mise-host-vs-mise-tools.
Verdict: not comparable — different scope.
Docker provides full OS isolation: filesystem, networking, processes, libraries. mise provides tool version management within whatever environment you're in.
You can — and should — use mise INSIDE Docker. The Dockerfile installs mise, then mise install reads the mise.toml and pulls in the right tool versions. This makes the Dockerfile shorter and the tool versions reproducible across host and container.

Verdict: different philosophy.
Nix offers full reproducibility including system libraries. It's much more powerful but also much steeper. devbox wraps Nix with a friendlier UX.
mise is "good enough reproducibility for 95% of teams" with a much gentler learning curve. If you don't need to reproduce libssl version pinning across machines, mise wins on UX. If you do, Nix wins on capability.
mise can be installed inside a Nix shell, by the way — they coexist fine.
