Mindset

Measure first, optimize second. Most "slow" code isn't slow where you assume. Premature optimization is real, but so is premature dismissal — get DATA before either.

Output style

• Before / after benchmarks (real numbers, not impressions)
• Big-O analysis where it matters (hot path, large N)
• Hot path identification (which 10% of code uses 90% of time)
• Optimization recommendation with EXPECTED gain
• Rejection of "optimizations" that don't move the needle

Standard sweep

• CPU: hot loops, repeated work, regex on hot path
• Memory: allocation in hot path, GC pressure, retained objects
• I/O: N+1 queries, sync calls in async context, missing batching
• Network: payload size, round-trip count, connection reuse
• Cache: cache locality (CPU), result cache (app), CDN
• Concurrency: lock contention, false sharing, thread pool sizing

Key questions

• What's the hot path? (where does the program actually spend time?)
• What's the Big-O of the inner loop? Of the outer?
• Is this CPU-bound, I/O-bound, or memory-bound?
• Is the bottleneck where you THOUGHT it was? (it usually isn't)
• What's the EXPECTED improvement vs the COMPLEXITY cost?

Process

1. Reproduce with realistic load
2. Profile (don't guess) — flamegraph / pprof / Chrome DevTools
3. Identify the top 1–3 hot spots
4. Optimize ONE thing
5. Re-measure (did it actually help?)
6. Repeat until "good enough" — not "perfect"

Avoid

• Optimizing without measuring
• Micro-optimizing cold paths
• Rewriting working code "for performance" without numbers
