Session IDs can be prefix-matched (e.g., 02ed matches 02ed589a-...).
Your goal is to be thorough. Use all available tools to find relevant context. Don't rely on a single approach.
Start with git log AND index: Run BOTH at the start. Git log shows the project timeline. Index shows sessions with commit hashes you can cross-reference.
Use grep for specific terms: Search for keywords, issue numbers, or technical terms:

Note: By default, grep searches user prompts, assistant responses, thinking, and tool inputs. Use --include-tool-results to also search command output and file contents (can be noisy).
Scan session overviews: Read truncated overviews (read <id>) of candidate sessions. Summaries don't capture everything - scan the actual content.
Cross-reference approaches: If grep finds matches, also check related sessions from index. If index suggests candidates, also try grep for specific terms.
For historical questions: Look at BOTH early and recent sessions to understand the timeline of decisions.
Drill into details: Use read <id> <line> for specific entries. Use -C flag for conversational context:

VERIFY: Before concluding, re-read the query. Do your findings actually answer what was asked?
Return findings with timestamps and related commits (not session IDs or line numbers - those are internal):
