Kamal

Use Kamal to deploy Rails applications with repeatable, safe workflows.

Quick start

Install: gem install kamal
Initialize in app: kamal init
- Creates config/deploy.yml and .kamal/secrets
First deploy: kamal setup
Regular deploys: kamal deploy

Configuration essentials

Base config: config/deploy.yml
Destinations: kamal deploy -d staging
- Merges config/deploy.staging.yml with the base config
Required keys: service, image, servers, registry
Avoid unrecognized keys; use x- prefixed extensions if needed

Secrets

Keep secrets in .kamal/secrets or environment variables.

Example entries in .kamal/secrets:

KAMAL_REGISTRY_PASSWORD=$KAMAL_REGISTRY_PASSWORD
RAILS_MASTER_KEY=$(cat config/master.key)

Note: kamal config prints merged config including secrets.

Common commands

Help: kamal --help
Show merged config: kamal config
Deploy: kamal deploy
Redeploy without bootstrap: kamal redeploy
Rollback: kamal rollback [VERSION]
Remove app/proxy/accessories: kamal remove
Cleanup: kamal prune
Manage app: kamal app (see kamal app --help)
Manage accessories: kamal accessory (see kamal accessory --help)
Manage proxy: kamal proxy
Server bootstrap only: kamal server

Recommended workflow

Review config/deploy.yml and secrets.
Run kamal setup for first deploys or new servers.
Use kamal deploy for routine releases.
Use kamal rollback for fast recovery.
Inspect with kamal details if something fails.
