Refine Prompt Command
Refine existing prompts through three modes: Fast Edit, Improve, or Refactor.

THREE REFINEMENT MODES:

<workflow>
## Step 1: Locate Prompt
If $ARGUMENTS provided:
- Check if it's a name or full path
- Search in
.cattoolkit/prompts/, .cattoolkit/chains/, .cattoolkit/generators/
- Validate file exists using Read tool
If not provided:
- Ask: "Which prompt do you want to refine?"
Read the prompt file to load current content.
Step 2: Analyze Current State
Document the prompt's current state:
- Type: Single / Chain Step / Meta-Prompt
- Structure: XML tags used, Markdown organization
- Quality: Clarity, examples, output format
- Issues: Any obvious problems or areas for improvement
Present brief analysis to user.
Step 3: Determine Refinement Mode
Use AskUserQuestion to determine the appropriate mode:
Fast Edit
When to use:
- Fix a specific bug or typo
- Update a single section
- Correct output format
- Add/remove one example
Characteristics:
- Targeted change
- Preserves overall structure
- Minimal intervention
Improve
When to use:
- Add better examples
- Clarify instructions
- Enhance output format
- Strengthen constraints
- Improve coverage
Characteristics:
- Multiple enhancements
- Preserves core logic
- Moderate intervention
Refactor
When to use:
- Prompt produces inconsistent results
- Fundamental structure issues
- Need complete optimization
- Major quality problems
Characteristics:
- Uses meta-prompt for optimization
- May significantly restructure
- Maximum intervention
Ask: "What level of refinement? (fast / improve / refactor)"
Step 4A: Fast Edit Mode
Process:
- Ask: "What specific change do you need?"
- Locate the exact section to modify
- Apply targeted edit using Edit tool
- Validate structure remains intact
- Present the change made
Validation:
- Single change applied correctly
- No side effects
- Structure preserved
Step 4B: Improve Mode
Process:

Identify improvement opportunities:
- Examples: Are they concrete and helpful?
- Instructions: Are they clear and unambiguous?
- Output format: Is it well-specified?
- Constraints: Are they appropriate?

- "I can improve: [list areas]. Which should I address?"

Apply improvements iteratively:
- Enhance examples with concrete cases
- Clarify ambiguous instructions
- Strengthen output format specification
- Add missing constraints

Validate enhanced prompt:
- XML/Markdown structure correct
- Improvements integrated properly
- Quality visibly improved
Validation:
- All selected improvements applied
- Structure remains compliant

Step 4C: Refactor Mode (Meta-Prompt Driven)
Process:

Load the prompt-optimizer meta-prompt:
Load the optimizer template from the prompt-library skill

Gather context for optimization:
- Ask: "What problems are you seeing with this prompt?"
- Ask: "What specific improvements are you hoping for?"
- If available: "Can you share example outputs that show the issues?"

Apply the prompt-optimizer meta-prompt:
- Feed the original prompt as input
- Include the issues and desired improvements
- Generate an optimized version

The meta-prompt will:
- Analyze the original prompt structure and intent
- Identify weaknesses and ambiguities
- Apply prompt engineering best practices
- Create an optimized version
- Document all changes and rationale

Present the refactored prompt:
- Show side-by-side key differences
- Explain optimization decisions
- Ask for approval before saving

If approved:
- Archive original:
{filename}.v{n}.md or move to archive folder
- Write new version to original location
- Update SUMMARY.md if chain step
Validation:
- Meta-prompt optimization completed
- Changes documented with rationale
- User approved refactored version
- Archive created for rollback
Step 5: Update Supporting Files
For Prompt Chains:
- Update SUMMARY.md if step purpose changed
- Check if downstream steps need adjustment
- Verify dependencies still accurate
For All Types:
- Validate YAML frontmatter if present
- Update version/timestamp metadata if applicable
Step 6: Present Results
Inform user of:
- Mode used: Fast Edit / Improve / Refactor
- Changes made: Summary of modifications
- Validation results: Structure compliance
- Archive location: If refactored, where original is saved
- Testing suggestion: How to verify the refinement worked
