Verify that every migration can be rolled back safely.
Schema migrations generated by makemigrations are automatically reversible -- verify no manual edits broke this
Data migrations using RunPython must provide a reverse_code function
If a migration is intentionally irreversible, it must be documented with a comment explaining why
Test rollback by running migrate <app> <previous_migration> in development

Ensure migrations do not silently drop data or make irreversible type changes.
Removing a field: verify the field data is no longer needed or has been migrated elsewhere
Changing field type: check for data truncation (e.g., TextField to CharField(max_length=50))
Making a nullable field non-nullable: verify all existing rows have values, provide a default
Renaming fields: use RenameField operation, not remove + add (which loses data)
Dropping tables: require explicit confirmation and backup verification

Evaluate whether migrations will acquire locks that block reads or writes on production tables.
AddField with a default value on PostgreSQL 11+ is safe (handled in metadata, no table rewrite)
AddField with a default on older PostgreSQL or MySQL may lock the table for rewrite
AddIndex should use AddIndex with Index and consider CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY via AddIndexConcurrently (requires django.contrib.postgres)
AlterField that changes column type may require a full table rewrite and lock
Estimate table size and assess whether the lock duration is acceptable

Check that migrations on large tables use appropriate strategies to minimize downtime.
For tables above 1M rows, flag any operation that acquires an ACCESS EXCLUSIVE lock
Batch data updates instead of single-statement UPDATE on the entire table
Consider using SeparateDatabaseAndState for complex schema changes
For column additions with backfill, use the three-step pattern (see section 9)
Time the migration on a staging database with production-scale data before deploying

Verify migration dependencies are correct and do not create circular references.
Each migration must declare dependencies on the migrations it depends on
Cross-app dependencies must be explicit in the dependencies list
Circular migration dependencies indicate an architectural problem -- refactor the models
Run showmigrations to verify the dependency graph is acyclic

Identify migration sequences that should be squashed for maintainability.

After squashing, verify the squashed migration replaces the originals correctly
