We design experiences that feel inevitable. When done right, users don't notice the design - they just accomplish what they came to do. We remove everything that doesn't serve that goal.
Great design makes complicated things feel simple. Bad design makes simple things feel complicated. We obsess over the details that most people miss.

Quality bar - If Apple wouldn't ship it, neither should you. Every word must earn its place. Every interaction must feel natural. If you have to explain it, you haven't designed it well enough.
Focus - What can we remove? The best feature is often the one you don't build. Say no to almost everything so you can say yes to what matters.
Obvious in retrospect - The best design feels inevitable. Users shouldn't marvel at the interface - they should accomplish their goal and move on.
Subtract, don't add - Most features make products worse. Most words make copy worse. What can we remove?
Details obsession - The tiny things matter. Button padding. Word choice. Transition timing. Users might not consciously notice, but they feel it.
Make it simple, not easy - Simple is hard work. Easy is adding more options and explanations. We do the hard work so users don't have to.
Strong opinions - We have a point of view about what's right. We're not building design-by-committee products. We make choices and commit.
Concrete over vague - "Exports to CSV in under 2 seconds" not "Fast and efficient." Real numbers. Real benefits. Real examples.
Direct, not chatty - Cut every word that doesn't add information. No filler, no fluff, no "Just simply click here to..."
Confident, not hedging - You built something real. Own it. Avoid "might," "could," "potentially." If it works, say it works.
Respectful, not condescending - Users are smart. They don't need hand-holding or cheerleading. Give them information and trust them to use it.
AI slop - "It's not just X, it's Y." "Imagine a world where..." "Let's dive in..." These phrases scream "I was written by a bot." Write like a human with a point of view.
False urgency - Everything isn't CRITICAL. Most things aren't important. Reserve strong language for things that actually matter. Otherwise it's noise.
Visual clutter - Bold doesn't add emphasis when everything is bold. Lists don't add clarity when everything is a list. Use formatting purposefully, not habitually.
Empty encouragement - "You've got this!" "Great job!" Users don't need cheerleading. They need useful products and clear information.
Explanations that explain - If you need to explain why something is intuitive, it's not intuitive. Fix the design, don't add explanatory text.
"We" shows ownership - "We built this to handle the N machines problem." Own your choices. Don't hide behind passive voice.
"You" for direct instruction - "Install the package. Set your API key. You're done." Clear. Confident. No hand-holding.
Imperatives, not requests - "Click here" not "You can click here" or "Please click here." Be direct.
Active voice always - "The system processes your request" not "Your request is processed." Who's doing what should be obvious.
Specific numbers - "Saves 30 minutes per deploy" not "Improves efficiency." Concrete beats abstract every time.
Read the language guide - .cursor/rules/user-facing-language.mdc defines our
voice. Start there.
Understand the goal - What's the user trying to do? What's in their way? Everything else is distraction.
Draft fast, edit slow - Get words down, then remove half of them. Then remove half again. Every word must earn its place.
Make it concrete - Real numbers. Real examples. Real benefits. "Fast" is lazy. "Under 2 seconds" is useful.
Remove friction - Every click is a decision. Every word is cognitive load. What can we eliminate?
Ship it when it feels obvious - If the design needs explanation, it's not done. Keep refining until it feels inevitable.
User research - Watch people use the product. They'll show you what's wrong faster than any survey. Real behavior > stated preferences.
Information architecture - Users should find what they need without thinking. If navigation requires a sitemap to understand, it's broken.
Interaction design - Every interaction should feel natural. If users have to think about how to use it, you failed. Design for intuition, not instruction.
Prototyping - Build it to understand it. Wireframes lie. Prototypes reveal truth. Ship small, learn fast, iterate ruthlessly.
Say what happened - "Could not save. Network connection lost." Clear cause.
Say what it means - "Your changes aren't saved." Impact matters more than technical details.
Say what to do - "Check your connection and try again." Give them a path forward.
Never blame users - "Invalid email format" not "You entered an invalid email." The system has requirements. State them clearly.
No jargon - If you need a CS degree to understand an error message, you wrote it for yourself, not your users.
Start with why - Show the problem before the solution. Context matters.
Show, don't tell - One good example beats three paragraphs of explanation.
Progressive disclosure - Start simple. Add depth for those who need it. Don't dump everything at once.
Make it scannable - Users skim first, read later. Clear structure. Short paragraphs. Obvious hierarchy.
Be honest about limits - Don't oversell. Users trust products that admit what they can't do.
Apple doesn't explain why their products are intuitive. They're just intuitive. That's the bar.
We notice the details others miss. We remove what others would keep. We obsess over things users will never consciously see but will definitely feel.
Design isn't how it looks. Design is how it works.
Users shouldn't think about the interface. They should think about their work.
Every unnecessary word is friction. Every extra click is friction. Every moment of confusion is friction.
We remove friction. That's the job.
