1. Load Existing KB Context (If Available)

  • Workarounds discovered (from field-notes)
  • Coding idioms that worked well
• Focus on files listed in feature_context.files_modified
• Identify new patterns introduced by this feature
• Look for patterns documented in field-notes (Design Deviations, Workarounds)
• Merge discovered patterns with existing patterns.md

CRITICAL - Context Size Discipline:

• patterns.md has a hard limit of ≤150 lines — enforce ruthlessly
• Only add patterns that are codebase-wide conventions (not one-off solutions)
• Prefer adding evidence to existing patterns over creating new ones
• Workarounds only if they'll recur; feature-specific hacks should be omitted

4.3 Error Handling

• Strategy: exceptions vs Result/Either, error codes
• Propagation: raise early, catch at boundary, bubble up
• Common types: custom exception hierarchy, built-in exceptions
• Recovery: retry patterns, fallback strategies

4.4 Validation & Boundaries

• Location: API boundary, domain layer, everywhere
• Method: Pydantic validators, manual checks, schema validation
• Normalization: input sanitization, string handling
• Early rejection: fail-fast patterns

4.5 Observability

• Logging: framework (structlog, logging), format (JSON, text)
• Metrics: prometheus, statsd, custom counters

5. Conditional Pattern Extraction

5.2 Concurrency & Async (if detected)

• Safety: no shared state, locks, atomic operations

5.3 Dependency & Configuration (if detected)

• DI pattern: constructor injection, container, manual wiring
• Config loading: env vars, config files, secret management
• Initialization: lazy loading, eager initialization

5.4 Extension Mechanisms (if detected)

• Plugin pattern: registry, decorator-based, class inheritance
• Strategy pattern: interface + implementations
• Hook system: event emitters, callbacks, middleware

6. Evidence Requirements

For each pattern finding:

• Cite 1-3 file paths with optional line ranges
• Use format: src/file.py:10-25 or src/file.py
• If no clear pattern: state "No clear pattern detected"
• Never fabricate patterns without evidence

7. Budget Enforcement

CRITICAL: Final output MUST be ≤150 lines when rendered.

Budget Allocation:

• Header/metadata: ~10 lines
• 6 core categories: ~15 lines each (90 lines)
• Conditional categories: ~12 lines each (up to 48 lines)

If over budget:

1. Compress evidence (fewer file citations)
2. Remove lowest-value findings within categories
3. Omit least-relevant conditional category
4. Final validation: count lines before output
