Break implementation plans into small, actionable tasks (1-3 story points) with dependencies and parallelization matrix
/plugin marketplace add majesticlabs-dev/majestic-marketplace/plugin install majestic-engineer@majestic-marketplaceTransform implementation plans into small, actionable tasks stored in the plan document. Uses Fibonacci-based story point estimation. Does NOT create tasks in external systems - only analyzes and documents.
Expected in task prompt: Plan file path and task manager type (github, beads, linear, etc.).
Read the plan file and identify:
## Acceptance Criteria section)Story Points = f(Complexity, Effort, Uncertainty)
Each task is estimated by synthesizing three factors:
| Factor | Description |
|---|---|
| Complexity | Technical difficulty, algorithm complexity, integrations, business logic |
| Effort | Volume of work - files to modify, tests to write, components to build |
| Uncertainty | Risk, unknowns, unfamiliar tech, unclear requirements |
Fibonacci Scale (Target: 1-3 points per task):
| Points | Reference Example | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fix CSS styling, update static text | Clear solution, no unknowns |
| 2 | Add label to form, simple config change | Straightforward, minor testing |
| 3 | Basic input validation, simple helper | Some logic, familiar patterns |
| 5 | CRUD endpoint with tests, model with associations | TOO LARGE - decompose |
| 8 | Integrate third-party API, complex query | TOO LARGE - decompose |
| 13 | Multi-step workflow, payment integration | TOO LARGE - decompose |
Tasks above 3 points MUST be decomposed - keep tasks small and focused.
If any task exceeds 3 points:
Run the architect agent to decompose:
Task(subagent_type: "majestic-engineer:plan:architect", prompt: "Decompose this task into smaller subtasks (max 3 points each): [task description]. Identify atomic components that can be completed independently.")
Use the architect's output to split into multiple 1-3 point tasks.
| Priority | Meaning | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| p1 | Critical | Blocks other tasks, core functionality |
| p2 | Important | Should be done soon, enables features |
| p3 | Nice-to-have | Can wait, polish/optimization |
For each task, determine:
Group tasks that can run concurrently:
If more than 10 tasks:
STOP and report:
## Task Breakdown: Scope Too Large
The plan breaks down into [N] tasks, suggesting scope is too large for a single implementation.
**Recommendation:** Split into smaller epics:
| Epic | Tasks | Focus |
|------|-------|-------|
| Epic 1: [name] | T1-T4 | [scope] |
| Epic 2: [name] | T5-T8 | [scope] |
Consider running `/majestic:blueprint` separately for each epic.
Do NOT proceed with breakdown if > 10 tasks.

### Parallelization Matrix
| Group | Tasks | Blocked By |
|-------|-------|------------|
| A | T1: [title] | - |
| B | T2: [title], T3: [title] | A |
| C | T4: [title] | B |
### Task Details
#### Group A (Start Immediately)
- [ ] **T1**: [Clear action title]
- Priority: p1
- Story Points: 3
- Depends on: none
- Files: [likely files to modify]
- Acceptance Criteria: [specific behavior this task must achieve] | [verification command or "manual"]
#### Group B (After Group A)
- [ ] **T2**: [Clear action title]
- Priority: p2
- Story Points: 2
- Depends on: T1
- Files: [files]
- Acceptance Criteria: [behavior] | [verification]
Good task titles are:
| Bad | Good |
|---|---|
| "Database stuff" | "Create users table migration" |
| "Add authentication" | "Add password validation to User model" |
| "Frontend work" | "Create login form component" |
After appending to the plan file:
## Task Breakdown Complete
**Plan:** <file path>
**Tasks:** [N] tasks across [M] parallel groups
**Total Story Points:** [sum]
**Max parallelism:** [X] tasks can run concurrently (Group [Y])
### Summary
| Group | Tasks | Points | Priority Mix |
|-------|-------|--------|--------------|
| A | N | X | p1: N |
| B | N | X | p2: N |
### Next Steps
Review the tasks in the plan file. When ready, the calling agent can create these in your task manager.
See plugins/majestic-engineer/agents/plan/resources/task-breakdown-example.md for a complete example of task breakdown output.
